The budget for someone else's wedding

Attending someone else’s wedding costs more than anyone admits out loud. The gift, the dress, the shoes, the drive if the wedding is outside Pristina, and then the part nobody plans for at all: the hair and the makeup. This page deals only with that last part, and it does it with published numbers rather than guesses. Here is the honest point of the page. In one Kosovo wedding season a woman can be invited to three, four or five weddings. A page connected to a salon telling you to spend less is unusual. We know. But a guest who leaves happy with a blow-dry from 10 € comes back next year, while a guest who feels squeezed does not come back at all. That is the whole calculation, and there is nothing hidden in it.

The three tiers and what they actually cost

Every figure below comes from the published price list. Nothing is invented, and every total is simple addition you can check on your fingers.

The minimal tier is a straight blow-dry from 10 € and makeup you do at home. That is it. For most guests at a large wedding this is genuinely enough, and there is nothing wrong with it. Professionally blown out hair reads as clean, shiny and looked after from across a hall, which is exactly the part people notice from a distance. Your usual face, a little stronger around the eyes, finishes the job.

The middle tier has two routes, depending on what you are actually missing. The first is a natural blow-dry from 15 € plus eyebrow shaping at 7 €, so at least 22 € in total. This is the right call when your hair is fine as it is but your brows have gone two months untouched, because tidy brows lift a face more than any eyeshadow does. Add eyebrow tinting at 8 € and the sum becomes 15 plus 7 plus 8, so at least 30 €. The second route is hairstyling at 25 € with makeup you do yourself. Here you are paying for an updo or half-updo that survives the whole night, and you keep the face in your own hands.

The full tier is hairstyling at 25 € plus makeup at 25 €, so 50 €. Add eyebrow shaping at 7 € and you land at 57 €. This tier is not pointless luxury. There is a specific set of people for whom it is the right choice, and the rest of the page says exactly who they are.

Who should spend what

This is the useful part of the page and the reason it exists. The real question is not what an updo costs. The real question is how close to the centre of the day you are standing.

The mother of the bride or the groom, and the sister, are the first category. They are photographed without pause, from the morning at the house to the last dance in the hall. They are in the official photographs, the family photographs, the video, and half of the pictures other people take on their phones. They are on their feet all day, greeting, dancing, and never once near a mirror. For them the full tier, 25 plus 25 which makes 50 €, is justified. This is the one place to spend without hesitating. The close friend, the one who is part of the bride’s group, who walks in with her or stands beside her in the planned photographs, belongs in the middle tier. Hairstyling at 25 € with your own makeup, or a natural blow-dry from 15 € plus brows at 7 €, depending on how visible your role really is. There is no need to go to 50 € just because you are in the group, but this is also not the day to take the bare minimum if you will be in ten close-up photographs.

The ordinary guest at a large wedding is the third category, and here we will say it plainly: a blow-dry is plenty. In a hall with three hundred or five hundred people, nobody is photographing you all night. You are in the pictures from your own table and in a wide shot of the dance floor. Spending 50 € to sit at the fourth table is a choice, not a requirement, and if that choice makes the next two weeks tight, do not make it. A blow-dry from 10 € and a carefully done face at home make you look put together, and that is all the day is asking of you.

This is not advice about scraping by. It is advice about spending where it shows. If you had exactly 50 € for the whole season, you would be better off putting all of it into the wedding where you are the sister than splitting it across five middling appointments at weddings where no camera is looking for you.

Several weddings in one season, and how to survive them

Summer in Kosovo brings weddings back to back. June, July and August are the months when the diaspora comes home and the calendar fills, and one woman can easily hold three invitations inside six weeks. This is where the numbers start speaking for themselves.

Take the full tier for all three and the arithmetic reads 50 plus 50 plus 50, which is 150 € for hair and makeup alone, before the gifts and before the dresses. Take a straight blow-dry for all three and the arithmetic reads 10 plus 10 plus 10, which is at least 30 €. The gap between those two seasons is around 120 €, and that is real money in a household.

The middle path is what women who handle the season well actually do. Sort the weddings by your role in them. For the wedding where you are the sister or the closest friend, take the full tier at 50 €. For the two weddings where you are an ordinary guest, take a blow-dry from 10 € each, which is at least 20 €. Your season total is 50 plus 20, so at least 70 €. You look complete where the camera is pointed at you, your hair is done at the other two, and you kept around 80 € compared with taking the full tier three times.

One small habit helps more than any product. Put the dates in your phone the moment the invitations arrive, not the week before. When you see all three together, the decision about where to spend takes about a minute. When you see them one at a time, each one feels like the only one and each one feels important, and that is how you end up booking the full tier three times without ever deciding to. Making one blow-dry cover two days

When two events fall close together, an engagement party on Friday and the wedding on Saturday, or a wedding on Saturday and a family lunch on Sunday, a single blow-dry from 10 € can cover both. This is the most direct way to halve the spend without lowering how you look.

Day one ends at the pillow. Do not sleep with your hair spread loose across it, because the friction flattens the shape and raises static. Tie it in a soft loose bun on top of the head with a fabric tie or a metal-free elastic, or plait it loosely to one side. A satin pillowcase does more here than any product, because the hair slides over it instead of dragging.

Day two needs two things. A little dry shampoo at the roots only, left a minute and worked through with your fingers, brings back the volume the night took out. And keep your hands out of your hair during the day, because the oil from your fingers is the main reason a blow-dry looks heavy by evening. If your hair runs oily by nature, say so when you book, because a blow-dry is built differently when the stylist knows it has to survive two days.

Doing your own makeup, and doing it well

If you decide to do your own makeup, do it properly, because a face rushed in five minutes undoes even a good blow-dry. Guest makeup does not need artistry. It needs three things that hold.

The base has to match your skin, neither darker nor lighter, and it has to survive hours in a hot hall. This is where the money is worth spending, because the base is the first thing seen and the first thing to break down. The eyes come second, and in a wedding hall with the lights low, the eyes are the only feature that carries into a photograph from any distance. A dark pencil along the lash line and a good mascara do more work than five eyeshadows. The lips are third, and the only rule is to carry the colour in your bag, because after dinner you will need it.

What is worth buying is a good base and a setting powder. What is not worth buying is a twenty-shade palette you will open twice a year. Do the arithmetic: twenty euro spent well once carries you through three weddings, while 25 € of professional makeup covers one evening. That calculation does not hold for everyone. It holds for the woman who can do it herself and does not get anxious doing it.

Booking as a group with sisters and cousins

When several of you are going to the same wedding, you book together, not separately. This is practical rather than merely pleasant.

Salons in Pristina run the day in time blocks. If four people ask for appointments on the same morning one by one, the slots land at different hours and you then wait for each other for two hours in a car outside. Book together and the salon plans the flow, works in parallel where it can, and gets you all out at roughly the same time, ready for the same car.

The one firm rule is that this has to be arranged in advance. Four people turning up unannounced on the morning of a summer wedding cannot be fitted into a schedule that filled weeks ago. Send one WhatsApp message with the names, what each person wants, and the date. For example two blow-dries from 10 € each, one hairstyling at 25 € and one makeup at 25 €, which comes to 10 plus 10 plus 25 plus 25, so at least 70 € for four people. When the salon knows in advance what is coming, it allots the right amount of time and nobody sits waiting.

The most expensive mistake is not the price

This is the line to keep from the page. The mistake that costs you most on the day of a wedding is not the amount you paid. It is the rushed appointment on the morning of the event.

When you arrive without a booking, or with a slot squeezed in at the last minute, three things happen at once. The work is hurried, because somebody else is waiting behind you. There is no time to explain what you want, so you get whatever comes out fastest. And you leave the salon with hair you did not ask for and nerves already frayed, and that feeling follows you through the whole day. You paid 25 € and you bought a bad morning.

The reverse costs exactly the same. A blow-dry from 10 €, done calmly, in a slot booked three days earlier, in a salon that knows what you want, gives you a head of hair that holds until midnight. Where B&B Elegance sits in a guest’s budget
