Eyebrow tinting

Updated: 2026-07-11

Eyebrow tint lasts roughly 3 to 4 weeks on the brow hairs and only a few days on the skin underneath them. That is why brows look dramatically fuller for the first days and then settle down to the colour of the hairs alone. Oily skin, acids, retinoids and sun exposure all shorten it. In Pristina a tint costs 8 € at B&B Elegance.

Eyebrow tinting is one of the cheapest services on a salon list and one of the ones that changes a face the most per euro spent. The question clients ask is almost never about the price. It is why the brows look so full on day one and noticeably softer a week later. The answer is not that the colour failed or that the person doing it got something wrong. It is that a tint works in two places at once, on the hairs and on the skin beneath them, and those two hold the colour for completely different lengths of time. At B&B Elegance in the Bregu i Diellit area of Pristina, where a tint costs 8 €, Besire explains this in the chair before she mixes anything.

The honest timeline is this: roughly 3 to 4 weeks on the hairs, and only a few days on the skin. Knowing that in advance changes how you read your own face on day five. Without it, people assume the tint has washed out when in reality only half the effect has gone, and that half was always temporary by design.

This page is only about how long a tint lasts and how to keep it. Brow shapes for different face shapes have their own page, and threading versus waxing versus tweezing has another one. Here we deal with what happens after the colour goes on and you walk out of the salon.

Why brows look fuller for the first few days

Cosmetic brow dye does not grip only the hair. During the 5 to 10 minutes it sits on the brow it also stains the top layer of skin between the hairs. That lightly darkened skin behaves like an invisible powder: it fills the gaps, widens the line of the brow optically, and makes the arch read as denser than it really is.

That is exactly the part you love when you look in the mirror as the colour comes off, and it is exactly the part that leaves first. Skin renews itself constantly, daily cleansing speeds the process along, and within 3 to 7 days that surface stain is simply gone. The brow has not faded. What is left is the thing that was ever going to last: the tinted hairs.

A good technician tells you this before she wipes the colour off, not after you come back disappointed. If someone promises you that day one look will hold for a month, they either do not know the work or they are selling you henna, which does stain the skin longer, without telling you.

How long the colour holds on the brow hairs

On the hairs, tint holds for roughly 3 to 4 weeks. That number is set by biology, not by the product.

A brow hair has a far shorter growth cycle than a scalp hair. Head hair grows for years, which is why colouring it produces a visible regrowth line at the roots. A brow hair lives for weeks to a few months, then sheds on its own and is replaced by a new hair that comes in your natural colour. The tint applied today only colours the hairs you have today. Tomorrow’s hairs know nothing about your appointment.

So a tinted brow fades in two ways at once. Pigment slowly leaves the hair shaft with every wash, and at the same time the tinted hairs shed one by one and untinted ones take their place. The result is a soft fade with no line and no hard edge, which is the opposite of what happens with hair colour. There is no moment when the tint runs out. It just becomes less and less visible until one morning you notice you have gone back to filling your brows in with a pencil.

What shortens your personal timeline

Two women tinted on the same day, with the same product, by the same hand, can lose the colour two weeks apart. These are the real reasons.

Oily skin is the first one. Sebum lifts pigment faster, especially the pigment sitting on the skin, and it works around the clock. If your forehead is shining by midday, plan for the short end of the range rather than the long one.

How often and with what you cleanse comes next. Oil based cleansers, micellar water and above all makeup remover dragged across the brows strip the tint without you noticing. Washing twice a day with a strong foaming cleanser eats the colour visibly faster than washing once with a gentle one.

Exfoliating acids and retinoids are the fastest killer of a brow tint, and most people never make the connection. If you use a glycolic or salicylic serum, or retinol, and you sweep it across the whole face without stopping, you are exfoliating precisely the skin that holds the stain. The skin part of the tint may not survive three days. That is not the salon’s fault.

Sun exposure breaks pigment down. A week at the beach between appointments leaves brows lighter than they would otherwise be, and salt water plus sunscreen rubbed in around the eyes speeds it up. Chlorine is harsher still, particularly if you swim several times a week.

How many shades darker you went changes what you see, not what the dye does. Choose a tone far darker than your own hairs and the contrast is high, so every bit of fading is obvious. Choose a tone close to your natural colour and the same amount of fading passes almost unnoticed, and the brows still look done in week four. That is the argument for asking for a shade lighter than you think you want the first time.

Finally, your own brow growth cycle. If your brow hairs turn over quickly, you lose the colour sooner, through no fault of your own and with nothing to fix.

The first 24 hours decide a lot

The colour keeps settling after you get out of the chair. Day one is the only day where a little care buys you whole days at the other end.

The rules are simple. No hot water on the brows, no long steamy showers, no sauna, no workout that leaves you dripping. No pool, no sea. No strong cleanser and no makeup remover over the brows that same evening. If you have to take makeup off, work around the brows rather than over them.

The face gets washed as normal. The brow zone is just left out of it for a day. Pat it dry with light touches, never rub it with a towel, because mechanical friction removes exactly the thin layer of skin the stain lives in. And keep your fingers off them, however tempting it is.

After 24 hours everything goes back to a normal routine, with a few adjustments described below.

How to make a brow tint last week after week

Gentle cleansing is most of the battle. A plain cleanser, no oils and no grit, goes around the brows and not over them. If you use micellar water for eye makeup, keep the cotton pad below the brow line.

Do not exfoliate over the brows. Not with a scrub, not with acids, not with a cleansing brush. If retinol or acids are part of your routine and you do not want to give them up, there is a practical trick: before the serum goes on, cover the brows with a thin layer of balm or petroleum jelly. That layer works as a wall and keeps the active product off the tinted skin. It looks silly for ten minutes and it buys you weeks.

Sunscreen every day, brows included. It protects the skin anyway and it slows the UV breakdown of the pigment at the same time.

Between appointments, a tinted brow gel is your best friend. When the colour starts dropping off in week three, two strokes of gel restore the look for that day without loading the skin and without rushing back for a fresh tint. Plenty of clients stretch the cycle from four weeks to five this way and lose nothing.

One more thing that costs nothing: try not to sleep with your face pressed into the pillow during the first week. Night time friction is the reason one brow fades before the other on some people.

When to rebook and how to plan around an event

The rhythm that works for most people is a tint every 4 weeks. It lines up naturally with shaping, which is done every 3 to 4 weeks, so the two services sit in a single appointment and save you a trip. Full figures for both are on the price page.

For an event there is a rule we relearn every summer in the middle of wedding season. If you want the fullest possible brow in photographs, get tinted 1 to 2 days before, because the stain on the skin is still there and the brows read as filled in. If you are worried about looking too heavy, or if this is your first tint and you do not know the result yet, leave 4 to 5 days. That is enough for the effect to settle back to the colour of the hairs alone.

What nobody should do is a first ever tint on the day of the event. If you have never worn the colour, you do not know how it suits you and you do not know how your skin reacts, and a wedding morning is not the time to find out.

Does tinting damage the eyebrow hairs

The honest answer: in normal use, no. Brow tint is gentler than hair colour, it sits on the brow for only a few minutes, and it works on the surface. It does not reach the follicle, does not stop growth and does not make hairs fall out. When someone says tinting made their brows fall out, in most cases what fell out was the colour and not the hair, or the shaping done in the same appointment was far too aggressive.

The real risk is a different one and it is called allergy. Brow dyes can cause a reaction in sensitive people, and the area is unfortunately close to the eye. That is why a patch test 48 hours ahead, usually behind the ear or on the inner forearm, is not a formality. If hair dye has ever left you itching, red or swollen, say so before anyone comes near you with a brush. A serious salon asks you first; if nobody asks, ask them.

In pregnancy many salons postpone brow tinting, not because there is strong evidence of harm but because skin sensitivity changes and nobody wants to discover that with a reaction next to an eye. Talk to the salon and, if you have any doubt, to your doctor.

The honest limit: tint does not grow brows

Tinting gives you two things: colour on the hairs you already have, and the illusion of density from the stained skin. That is the whole list. It does not wake a dormant follicle, does not thicken hairs and does not speed growth.

For naturally sparse brows, or for gaps left by the overplucking of the 2000s, tint is genuinely useful, because the fine colourless hairs you cannot even see are the ones that suddenly show up once they take colour. Clients are often surprised how many hairs they actually had. But a truly bare patch, where the follicle no longer works, stays bare after a tint too. There the dye only stains the skin, and that part lasts a few days. The full picture of what does and does not help thin brows is in our main eyebrow guide.

Tint versus a daily brow pencil or gel

This is the trade each person has to weigh for herself. A tint costs 8 € and saves you two to five minutes every morning for three to four weeks. A pencil and a gel cost once and last for months, but they ask for work every single day, and in summer heat or through a long wedding they smudge, while a tint goes nowhere.

Makeup, on the other hand, gives control that a tint cannot. With a pencil you change the shape, lift the arch, extend the tail, go soft one day and strong the next. A tint hands you one colour for three weeks, and if it came out darker than you wanted, you wait for it to fade.

The setup most clients in Pristina end up with is the combination: a tint every four weeks for the base, and a tinted gel on the days they want more. Mornings stay fast and the control is there when it is needed.

Eyebrow tinting at B&B Elegance

At B&B Elegance, on Rr. Jakov Xoxa near Muharrem Fejza, in the Bregu i Diellit area and a short walk from Rruga B, brow tinting is done by Besire, the mother, the same hand that covers hair with more than twenty years of experience. The salon is a mother and daughter business: Besire takes hair, brows and makeup, while her daughter Biondina does the facial treatments, so a whole appointment can be closed in one visit. Eyebrow tinting costs 8 € and eyebrow shaping 7 €, which is why most clients book the two together. Besire asks how dark you want the colour before she mixes it, and for a first tint she will steer you a shade lighter, because it is far easier to go darker next time than to wait out a colour that came in too strong. The salon is open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00, closed Sunday. Appointments are made by phone call, WhatsApp or Viber on +383 44 397 749 or +383 49 326 303.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my brows look darker on day one and lighter a week later?

Brow tint colours the hairs and stains the skin between them at the same time. The stain on the skin fills the gaps optically and disappears within a few days as the skin renews itself, which is why day one always looks the strongest. What remains after that week is the real result: the tinted hairs, which hold their colour for 3 to 4 weeks.

Does tinting damage the eyebrow hairs?

Brow tint is a mild cosmetic dye that sits on the surface for a few minutes and does not reach the follicle, so in normal use it does not damage the hairs or make them fall out. The real risk is not damage but allergy. A patch test 48 hours before a first tint is the step nobody should skip, especially if hair dye has ever irritated your skin.

How much does eyebrow tinting cost in Pristina?

At B&B Elegance in the Bregu i Diellit area, eyebrow tinting costs 8 € and eyebrow shaping 7 €, and most clients book the two together in a single appointment. The work takes only a few minutes and slots easily onto a hair appointment. The salon is open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00.

Can I wash my face the same evening after a brow tint?

The face can be washed, but the brow area is left alone for the first 24 hours. Hot water, steam, saunas, oil based cleansers and makeup remover passing over the brows pull the pigment out early. Wash around the brows, pat the area dry and never rub it with a towel.

Does tinting make eyebrows grow?

Tinting does not make eyebrows grow. It colours the hairs you already have and darkens the skin under them, which reads as a denser brow, but the follicle is never touched. If you have gaps left from years of overplucking, tint covers them optically for a while and does nothing about the cause.

How often can eyebrows be tinted safely?

Once every 4 weeks is the normal rhythm, because that is how long the colour holds on the hairs. Tinting more often than every 3 weeks makes little sense: there are few new hairs to catch and the skin gets loaded for nothing. Between sessions a tinted brow gel keeps the look without touching the dye at all.
